Some 411 on The MOVIE!

Tara Strong will voice some of Ariel's sisters and Sally Field will voice Ariel's mother, Athena. Ariel's sister, Alana, will have a big role in this movie too. Ursula will make an appearence, along with new characters, like the ones mentioned in the trivia question. Sebastian will own a (tee-hee) night club named Catfish Club (probably the setting in the preview on The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition DVD). A soundtrack is expected to come out along with the DVD.

At Disney Toons Sonora (second floor), there is a thin coating of white dust over desks and cubicles on the east side of the building as reconstruction continues in the west. Happily, only a couple of dozen staffers have to wipe off their work surfaces each morning when they come in.
Most of Mermaid III, the last hand-drawn direct-to-video feature on the books, has been shipped to Toon City.
Downstairs at Disney TVA -- where dust has stayed away and most upstairs noise is subdued -- work continues apace on the second season of Mickey's Clubhouse (thirty-nine episodes). There's also work going on for Emeperor's New School second season, with a third season to start shortly.

At DisneyToons, work continues on Mermaid III, much of which is shipped, and the Fairies Trilogy (which is undergoing shifts as Tinkerbell goes through changes....)

At Disney Toons, which now occupies part of the second and third floors of the Frank G. Wells Building on the Disney Burbank lot and the second floor of the Disney Sonora Building in Glendale, work wraps up on "Cinderella III" and continues on "Mermaid III". Earlier in the week, artists told me that Toons top kick Sharon Morrill came through, holding meetings with Toons personnel; I'm informed that she said there would be cutbacks in the number of Toons releases going forward, but that nobody was going to be laid off of current productions. Rather, staff would be reduced through attrition as the number of projects shrink.
(Disney Toons has been on a roll of late, what with "Bambi II" exceeding the studio's expectations as regards units sold. But Disney, per the trades, is in the midst of a down-sizing cycle.)
Hunting for treasure "under the sea" of rumorJune 26, 2006
A recent Animated News article on the rumored cancellation of The Little Mermaid III has sparked debate amongst readers and a handful of e-mails supporting a counter-claim. One e-mail in particular notes that Ultimate Disney features a recent screen shot of the bonus features menu from the forth coming Little Mermaid platinum edition DVD which includes a "Musical Sneak Peek" of The Little Mermaid III. Meanwhile, the forums at the same site point to an article published in a recent edition of Video Business Magazine (note: article not currently available on-line). The interesting blurb suggests that the new movie will be a prequel to the original and provides an interesting quote from DisneyToon president, Sheron Morrill stating that the division is getting out of the sequel business and into developing new franchises for Disney's pre-established characters. "We knew we couldn't do sequels forever. I also knew we didn't want to be in the business of doing the fours and fives." Such a statement from an executive at this level also questions the validity of another rumor regarding the closing of DisneyToon Studios altogether.
More Disney DTV titles on the wayMay 7, 2005
Variety, via Ultimate Disney, indicates that Kronk's New Groove may see its DVD release sometime in January 2006, in order to coincide with the debut of the Disney Channel series The Emperor's New School. In addition, the article mentions that currently in the works at DisneyToon Studios are the following projects: Cinderella III, The Little Mermaid III, Brother Bear II, The Aristocats II, The Tinker Bell Movie, Mickey in Space, and The Fox and the Hound II.
